The “new project” to Washington Square would be an extension of the current project (terminating in Chinatown), which is due for the federal matching funds.

I certainly agree that transit improvements in the 30/45 corridor are very necessary — but that is not the same as saying that this subway, in its current form, is very necessary. There is a definite disconnect between the huge cost of this project and the not-as-huge benefit. But: more on that later.

I think that although the central subway is very expensive, it is very necessary. The new project (with the tunnel going all the way to Washington Square Park) is a great improvement over the old project. But I do agree: it is way too short. It’s a start and a start is better than nothing.
